Encouraging Babies to Brush Their Teeth: Tips for Parents

TCE Baby19 April 202435

Many babies resist toothbrushing, closing their mouths tightly or biting the brush when parents are brushing their teeth. This is because they develop self-awareness around 18 months, wanting to do things themselves. Bad past experiences or not understanding the importance of brushing can also cause resistance. To encourage them to brush their teeth regularly, here are some tips for parents to try out.

1. Choose Likeable Tools

Let babies pick toothbrushes and cups with their favourite cartoon characters. Ensure the brush fits their mouth and the bristles are soft. Toothpaste flavours like strawberry or mango can also make brushing fun.

2. Explain Importance

Use books or visual aids to explain why brushing is vital. Showing pictures of decayed teeth or demonstrating on an apple can make the importance clear.

3. Play Brushing Games

Combine brushing with games. Draw teeth on paper, mark some black spots, and let babies brush them away. Turn brushing into a game by pretending the brush is a train or involving their favourite toy.

In the end, persistence pays off. Before babies develop the habit, stay consistent. Help them rinse after meals, floss, and schedule dental check-ups every 3-6 months. One day, your baby might even remind you it's time to brush their teeth!
