Understanding the Icons on Baby Bottles:

Food-Grade Materials Icon

• Category 1, 2, 4, and 5 are considered food grade
• Category 3, 6 are not safe to be used
• Category 7 may or may not contain chemicals that can leach into food depending on the ingredients used to produce them.

The number 7 is considered the “other plastic” category, which is a catch-all for other types of plastic that don’t belong in any of the first six categories or are combinations of multiple types. 

I include it because some of the most popular baby bottle material (PPSU) is identified in this category. So if you came across any plastic material with the number 7 that is safe to use, it should have a BPA Free icon (I’ll take about this in the next point)

BPA-Free Icon

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a chemical commonly found in certain plastics when heated and has been associated with various health risks, and may be harmful to the normal development of babies and infants under the age of 2. 

Opting for bottles labeled as BPA-free guarantees that your lil’ bub won't be exposed to this potentially harmful substance.

Microwave-Safe Icon

Microwaving bottles can be convenient for warming milk quickly. The microwave-safe icon indicates that the bottle can be safely used in the microwave without the risk of melting or releasing harmful chemicals. 

However, always follow the manufacturer's guidelines and precautions for microwave use. *Place only the bottle without the cap and teat

But heating your milk in the microwave could result in uneven heating which can burn a baby’s mouth.

If your lil’ bub prefers the milk warmed, you can consider getting a bottle warmer as a safer alternative.

Common Materials Used in Baby Bottles:

Glass

Plastic

There are so many materials in the market, so it's important to be aware of the different types of plastic used. 

The only indicator to look for is to ensure the bottles are made from BPA-free plastics, such as polypropylene (PP) or Polyphenylsulfone (PPSU).

PPSU is naturally amber coloured and it’s the 'gold standard' when it comes to baby bottles for its higher resistance to heat and impact, making it a safe choice for your baby's feeding needs.

This means it can handle both hot and cold liquids without affecting the bottle's shape or texture. It’s also free from BPA, BPS, and other harmful chemicals, ensuring your baby's health and safety.

*Note: Every plastic bottle will have their lifespan, make sure you change it according to the suggested period by the bottle manufacturer.

Teats Material:

Silicone

Silicone is a synthetic material with greater durability. It is transparent, firm, and more resistant to heat, sun exposure, and fatty foods. 

Because of its heat resistance, it can be sterilized repeatedly without creating cracks that might support bacterial growth.

Latex

Since latex is a natural substance and is softer and more flexible than silicone, Latex teats are said to feel more like a real nipple. 

Hence, it may be simpler for infants to get used to and it is less likely to get bitten.
