Understanding the “Bloody Show” in Late Pregnancy

TCE Baby29 May 2024119

What is the “Bloody Show”?

The uterus is like a sealed bag, with the cervix acting as the tightly tied opening, sealed by mucus like a cork.

Before labor, the cervix softens, thins, and widens. This causes the fetal membranes to loosen and separate from the uterine wall, breaking capillaries and causing a small amount of bleeding. The mucus plug in the cervical canal dislodges and mixes with blood, flowing out through the vagina, known as the “bloody show”.

What Does Normal “Bloody Show” Look Like?

-Color: Brown, pink, or red.

-Texture: Sticky, jelly-like.

-Amount: Small, much less than a menstrual period, manageable with a panty liner.

When to Seek Medical Attention

Complications like placenta previa and placental abruption can cause abnormal bleeding. If you have heavy bleeding, continuous abdominal pain, dizziness, or other symptoms, go to the hospital immediately. Also, if the bloody show occurs before 37 weeks, regardless of the amount, see a doctor right away.

How Soon Will Labor Start?

The bloody show indicates labor is approaching but doesn’t mean it will start immediately. Most expectant mothers experience contractions within 24 to 48 hours. However, some may take up to a week or longer.

What to Do After the Bloody Show

Don’t panic. Prepare your delivery items and rest to conserve energy. Wait for regular contractions before going to the hospital. If concerned and financially possible, consider checking into the hospital early.

Monitoring the Bloody Show

Watch the amount, color, and consistency of the bleeding, and note any pain. If anything seems abnormal, go to the hospital for a checkup.

Labor symptoms are different, and not all expectant mothers will experience a bloody show. If you don’t, don’t worry. Look for other signs like water breaking or contractions.
